Announcements: Mark Richard introduced Luis Terrazas and said he was one of the sponsors for our polio fundraiser concert.
Jim Callender announced that Niel McDonald’s son won grand champion steer at the fair and sold it for $17,000. Also Niel’s daughter won grand champion lamb and reserve champion lamb
and sold them both at the fair. Lizzie McDonald (home from BYU ) was there to help her sister and brother get their animals prepared.
The project services committee is meeting on Wednesday at Q’s Bistro at 4 pm. 

Art reminded everyone that there is no meeting on October 1, there will be a social instead at the golf course grill beginning at 5 pm.
Art thanked the Fairgate ticket sellers, and said he believed Maggie Callaway served for over 10 hours.
Mark Richard reiterated the information about the polio concert on October 26 at Light Hall. Art named some of the sponsors: Terrazas Funeral Home, Q’s Bistro, Buffalo Bud Farming Co., Datura Therapeutic Spa, Bobby Carrillo, contributions and services by WNMU, Silver City Daily Press, and  sponsorship by three  unnamed Rotarians.
Art gave a shout out to Ray Goellner and gave a brief update on his health situation. Ray will be going to Albuquerque for possible heart surgery. Art also stated we need speakers for November and asked if anyone would volunteer to solicit speakers for the month.

It was decided there would be a no meeting the week of Thanksgiving.

Happy Dollars: Dorothy Moore gave $6 that was donated to Rotary by an attendee at the County Fair.

 

Program: Art introduced our speaker, Heidi Pendleton, the School Director of the Guadalupe Montessori School. Heidi told us that the school has been around since 1979 although many are not aware of it. One of her goals is to find a way to help the community understand the importance and relevancy of having this choice in
education available here in Silver City . She discovered the Montessori school when she was looking into educational
opportunities available for her children. The school offers education for pre-k to 11-12 year-olds. Maria Montessori, an Italian scientist, observed a need among young children to manipulate their environment with their hands making balls out of scraps and dirt. This created a desire to develop lifelong learning skills for children. The school works with the first two stages of development for pre-k to 5 and then 6-12 year olds. The first plane of development basically deals with the physical independence of the child. The second plane deals with a reasoning mind. Children are developing mental independence. Maria Montessori also developed a third plane that dealt with adolescence, but that is not taught at this school. The fourth plane of development goes up to age 24 when the brain is fully developed. Heidi spoke about Maria Montessori’s vision for education -  to develop child-led curriculum where the child is fully engaged in what they are studying. This leads to the development of focus and intrinsic motivation. The school collaborates regularly with the Silver City and Cobre schools and
seeks active community involvement in the curriculum.
The school has a community garden which helps teach natural sciences and grow food for lunch at the school, as well as provide lunch for the Aldo Leopoldo School. There is no sports program, but the garden work helps give students a sense of community. During COVID, the school was able to provide lunch for school members and their parents. 
After a question and answer period, Art gave Heidi a small thank-you gift.

Luis Terrazas told us that a special meeting of the State Assembly Health Committee was taking place here at WNMU while we were meeting to discuss issues facing GRMC and the local health community. He invited us to attend.
