Announcements: Mark Richard reminded us about the Mariachi Concert on October 26th. We are looking for additional sponsorships. Sponsorship letters can be obtained from Art Thorn.
Dorothy Moore gave a reminder of the Bake Sale benefitting the Indian Springs Ranch is scheduled of Friday, September 7th from 10 am to 2 pm in Gough Park.

Art Thorn told us that Kathy Eaton is in the hospital in Chicago with a foot problem. He also announced that Diane LeBlanc of the DAR will be our speaker on September 10.

Program:

After starting things off with a couple of jokes, Dr. Shepard then told us that in November's election we will have an opportunity to vote on Higher Education Bond 3, which is a general obligation bond issue designed to provide $94 million in state funding for facilities construction and improvement at higher education institutions in New Mexico. Included is $9 million for construction of a new WNUM Early Childhood Education Center to be located on the University's property near the Montessori School on Alabama Street. This construction is part of a longer-term plan to build a new home for the School of Education. If the bond issue is approved, it will not result in a tax increase, since it will replace an existing general obligation bond which is schedule to expire.

Dr. Shepard also told us about other current projects going on at the University: New cement was poured at the entrance to the PE Complex, the Nursing Building has new lighting, there is a new sign near Old James Stadium and a new sculpture by artist Michael Metcalf will be placed near the stadium in the future. In Deming the University has constructed a new Health Professions Building and a new Mimbres Learning Center. Also, there are plans for a new Vocational Center, once WNMU is be able to secure legislative funding for it.
