He led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, gave the invocation and led us in the recitation of the Four-Way Test.

Announcements: Carlos reminded us that the next two meetings will also be held in the HMS Conference Room, at 1007 N. Pope St. Lunch will again be available for a $5 donation.
Raul Turrieta and Rotarian Bart Roselli regaled us with an enthusiastic announcement about the upcoming Burlesque Baseball event on May 18 at 1:00 PM at James Stadium. The event, a fund-raiser for the Silver City Museum, will feature rides, refreshments, prizes for costumes, and beer from Open Space Brewing. (This is a family-friendly event: The word “burlesque” actually means a performance or event that seeks to ridicule and evoke laughter by exaggeration or imitation.)
Raul announced a 5K run at the Fort Bayard Parade Grounds on May 11 at 9:30 AM to benefit “Fight Like a Girl.” Raul will be in pink – and urged us to dress similarly.

Linda Telaak announced that, as of May 8, her barn will be empty due to items being moved to Kathy Eaton's house for the auction!
Peter Falley celebrated that Sunny is back after a lengthy absence – and Harry is home from the hospital!
Program: Diana Ingalls Leyba, Youth Mural Program
President Carlos introduced our speaker, Diana Ingalls Leyba, and Mark Richard stated that the Youth Mural Program has an upcoming project in Bayard that Rotary might want to support and/or sponsor as part of our club centennial observance.
Diana shared that this program began in 2003 and that youth have created murals throughout Grant County – from Glenwood to the City of Rocks. The mission of the program is to teach kids about our history and culture and to foster their
connection to the community. Youth learn collaboration and problem-solving as well as the history of our area.
Diana showed us photos of many of the projects they have completed including murals at the pool, the co-op, the public library and the museum as well as the Skate Park Dome, the Glenwood Community Center, Penny Park, the 12th Street Bridge, the Visitors’ Center, and the Commons.
These projects are designed by students, who are paired with local artists. The youth select the historical events to be depicted and the images are placed on walls using gridding or a projector.
Mark’s proposal to our club is that we support the next mural project – a one-to-two-year undertaking to create a mural on a building in Bayard. The building is on the main drag near the Cobre School Administration Building parking lot and is readily visible from the street. Mark suggested that the mural could depict “100 years of history” including Rotary. The total cost is yet to be determined but is estimated at between $12K and $20K. Food for thought!
