Announcements:
Rosie: "Tom and I drove 17 hours to drive to WEPO, south of Chihuahua. The biggest need there is for water, but it has to be a solar system, as there is no electricity. Rotary club in Chihuahua worked with a club in Canada, who drove the equipment directly to the site, dug the hole and then drove back to Canada." The drive home for Rosie and Tom was only 13 hours. They will give a more in-depth talk at a later date.
Jim: "On February 15, Western is having a scholarship "teaching" hour at 1 p.m., to explain the process for choosing applicants. So far there are five completed applications."
"Morning Star will do small backpacks for the Kids Hygiene Dental session for kindergarten classes to be held on Friday, March 8, 2:30 p.m. at the 6th Street Elementary. They will charge us $2.00 each, and if companies want their logo on them, that also can be done, and the advertising will help defray our cost. Morning Star needs the orders by next week, the 20th." Jim said he will order 200, and that will hold toothbrushes and toothpaste.

Steve: "I have brochures that tell what went on in Santa Fe last month."
Program:
Carlos introduced Jessica Swapp Massengil. Jessica explained that she is the NMSU Agricultural Extension Agent in Grant County and that she is also the coordinator for the county's 4-H program. The latter role was the primary topic of her talk. She explained that
4-H is a program designed to teach students science, biology and other subjects through hands-on experience. Students in the program range from age 5 to 19. There are about 195 students in the program in Grant County, organized into 15 clubs. Each club has an adult volunteer as club leader, but the clubs are actually run by the students themselves. The club leadership generally consists of the older students in the club who serve as president, secretary, treasurer and in other roles. The clubs participate in a variety of projects designed to give them hands-on experience and to teach them subjects that they will need to understand if they embark on a career in agriculture. Examples are work with livestock, Germ Detective (teaching the value of hand washing and cleanliness), and various community service activities. Jessica showed some slides which covered some of the many areas that 4-H clubs are involved in.
