The club meeting was called to order by President Carlos Lucero.

 

Art Thorn presented a list of club projects performed by other clubs in the district. He suggested that SC Rotary initiate some small projects that were easy to perform, especially by seniors. He suggested that we adopt projects of a similar nature in lieu of a district grant project this year, since District funds will amount only to $500-$1500. Art will send out a list of the other club projects as food for thought.

 

Mark Richard suggested we partner on a building mural in Bayard. The was a general consensus that the mining district merits our attention.

 

Tom Bates discussed the current status of the Wepo water project and his frustration over getting help from Rotary higher-ups. Peter said that it was important for the Chihuahua club to take operational control of the project. The fact that the engineering scope of the project was as yet unknown means that a grant application is premature, and we should be looking at a multiyear effort to bring together the engineering, the chain of command on the administration of the project, lining up partner clubs, designating the lead U.S. club, preparing a budget, and applying for a grant.

 

Art discussed the opening of the Cobre Parents' Center next door to Baird Elementary. The opening ceremony was led by the Center director Teresa Villa and attended by Art, Laura Dodge of Freeport McMoRan, Raul Turrieta, Cobre school officials and various others. Our club's Cobre food security grant funded the freezer, refrigerator and shelving in the food pantry within the Center. The freezer features a Silver City Rotary sign. The Commons Center for Food Security, our partner on the grant, stocked the shelving with food items. The Center will also offer hygiene projects, and Tom agreed to contact the school district nurse about stocking the hygiene products through our District grant for hygiene supplies.
